Building a business in tech is never easy. It takes more than just skill or knowledge—it takes vision, resilience, and a deep understanding of the real-world problems that clients face. That’s exactly what sets Iain Cox apart.
With over 45 years of experience in technology, Iain is the founder of Clever Cloud Ltd and Unlock My Cloud, two companies helping financial service providers across the UK and Europe set up secure, certified cloud environments.
This is the story of how Iain moved from the world of large enterprises to launching his own consulting ventures—and why his work matters now more than ever.
Iain started his journey in enterprise architecture, working with large companies to build secure, efficient IT systems. Over time, he gained certifications like CISSP, which strengthened his focus on security and compliance.
But after years in big organizations, Iain wanted to create more impact. So he decided to work independently, helping smaller, regulated businesses like fintech startups, payment service providers, and e-money firms navigate the complex world of cybersecurity and compliance standards.
Today, he works with clients who need help with:
● ISO 27001, NIST2, and DORA certifications
● Becoming licensed payment initiators in the UK
● Building cloud-native systems that meet regulatory needs
Iain works as a solopreneur. While he often collaborates with trusted associates, most of his projects come through referrals and professional networks.
“Business is personal,” Iain says. “When you’re trusted in your space, people come
back to you.”
But even with deep experience, finding new clients isn’t easy. Like many consultants, Iain depends on LinkedIn to grow his visibility—but admits it’s a slow process.
“The hardest part is getting in front of the right people at the right time.”
And that’s a challenge almost every tech founder faces.
One thing Iain is passionate about is doing things the right way—right from the start.
He often sees early-stage companies rush to launch their MVP (Minimum Viable Product) without thinking long term. The result? A system that works—but isn’t scalable, secure, or efficient. Many end up scrapping it and starting over.
“If you know what ‘good’ looks like, you can build it well from the beginning—and
save a lot of time and money later.”
His advice to startups: invest early in strong architecture. It doesn’t cost much more, and it will save you from rebuilding when your company starts growing.
Iain has strong views on how AI is changing the tech world. While he believes in its power, he also sees potential risks.
One concern is that companies are adopting AI without proper strategy or governance. This can lead to problems like data poisoning or lack of control over AI tools.
Another concern is the impact on talent development. If AI replaces junior developers, where will the next generation of senior engineers come from?
“We need to treat AI as a tool—not a replacement. Use it wisely, and keep investing
in people.”
Iain believes that sales and marketing are critical for any business, no matter how technical it is.
He has seen founders get too focused on product development while ignoring how to attract and retain clients. But without sales, he says, you don’t have a business.
“Even if you have a great product, if nobody knows about it, it doesn’t matter.”
Founders, especially in the early stages, must find a balance between building the product and talking to potential clients. That’s how companies grow—from vision to real revenue.
At Exotto, we work with tech founders and B2B consultants like Iain to help them build predictable client acquisition systems—so they’re not always relying on word of mouth.
